United Housing, a non-profit organization committed to addressing the pressing need for affordable housing solutions in the Mid-South region, has a multifaceted approach. They offer homeownership counseling, and mortgage products tailored to those typically excluded from the conventional market, and engage in housing development initiatives. Recently, United Housing received the generous donation of the former Caritas Village building in the Binghampton neighborhood.

Before delving into the full design process, ddG conducted an initial assessment and fit study. This groundwork was crucial in ensuring that the subsequent design would meet the organization's needs effectively. Additionally, navigating the regulatory landscape, United Housing secured approval from the Shelby County Land Use Control Board for modifications to the previously planned development.

The overarching objective for renovating the building was to create a dynamic space conducive to various activities. This included versatile offices, co-working spaces, and facilities to host classes and communal events organized by United Housing. The renovation aimed to anticipate the organization's evolving requirements, ensuring the space remains adaptable for future needs.

Drawing inspiration from the fundamental elements of home construction, the design concept prioritized refuge, flexibility, collaboration, and adaptability. The first floor was designed to be versatile, featuring a multifunctional classroom area that seamlessly transitions into an open space for events. This area is complemented by a collaborative breakroom, dedicated offices for United Housing personnel, and flexible co-working spaces.

Continuing the theme of flexibility and adaptability, demountable office walls were integrated into the renovation. On the second floor, various informal meeting spots, a conference room, and designated offices for United Housing staff promote collaboration and productivity. This thoughtful design ensures that the space can evolve alongside the organization's needs, fostering a supportive environment for its mission to thrive.
