The Whitehaven Community Center is expanding to provide revenue generation opportunities for Memphis Parks with the inclusion of a flexible gathering hall that can function as a banquet space, an event hall, and an overflow space for the Community Center itself. The building expansion was designed to connect the existing Community Center to the existing Tennis Center, which treats the property as a campus setting to activate more areas of use. This multi-function space will serve both the Community Center and the Whitehaven community through interior programming aspects and secure, outdoor “rooms.” The addition will maximize usable square footage to get the most gathering space relative to the supporting areas.

working with the existing brutalist architecture, the additional layers included a similar treatment of the main entry portal, more glazing to enhance the interior environment, and a vertical box rib panel at the 2-story form to both physically and visually lighten the expression.
